1. WHAT IS NSEC?
Nigeria Society for Environmental
Conservation (NSEC) is a group of
students studying forestry, wildlife and environmental related courses in
tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The society creates opportunities for
students in different parts of Nigeria to interact and learn from each other,
as well as involve and engage in practical aspects of biodiversity conservation
and environmental education.
2. WHY AND WHERE IS THE
CONFERENCE HOLDING?
An inaugural meeting of the society was
held in October, 2015 at University of Ibadan. The meeting was attended by about
60 students representing different discipline and tertiary institutions in
Nigeria. During the meeting, the Executive Members were elected and sworn into
their respective offices. It was also agreed at the meeting that the Maiden
Conference of the society should be held in 2016. Eventually, University of
Ilorin was selected to host the maiden conference and UNILORIN Forestry Student
Association (UFSA UNILORIN) has
graciously accepted this offer. The Conference theme is "THE FUTURE OF BIODIVERSITY
CONSERVATION IN NIGERIA: INDIVIDUAL ROLES" and to be held between May 27 - 28th, 2016 in the Dept. of Forest Resources Management,
UNILORIN
Submitted abstracts
should address the above conference theme, and in particular one of the sub
themes outlined below.
- The status and threat of Nigerian biodiversity
- The Role of GIS in Biodiversity Conservation
- Effects of Climate change on Nigerian
Biodiversity
- Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning and
services
- Biodiversity and livelihoods in Nigerian rural
and urban areas.
3.
WHY SHOULD I ATTEND?
All participants will have the
opportunity to present his/her research to a wider audience of conservationists
and also have first hand training opportunity on GIS application and usage in biodiversity
conservation, range of digital data collection and analysis, effective method
on research design and implementation/experimentation leading to capacity building
process of the young conservationists. Forum for social interaction, networking
and collaboration and learning on-site through field trip will also be
available.

WHY IS NSEC ACTIVITIES MAINLY FOR STUDENT?
NSEC group targeted most of
its programme towards building the capacity of the young and up-coming Nigerian conservation scientists (i.e. students) in
Nigeria tertiary institutions so as to make them be at par with other colleagues
around the world. Young
conservationists are the generation that uultimately
hold the key to the continued existence of there maiming biodiversities in Nigeria ecosystems.
Many of the Nigerian
students in conservation disciplines are faced with the challenge of lack of
appropriate information and motivation on the prospect of their career. A
significant number of the students therefore end-up their career at the first
degree while those with postgraduate degree divert to other professions.

WHAT ARE THE OUTLINED ACTIVITIES FOR THE CONFERENCE?
The outlined programmes for the 2 day conference are
listed below.
A. DAY 1 – May 27, 2016.
a. Opening
Programme: This is a
short formal opening ceremony of the conference.
b. Workshops:
Participants
will be eligible to participate in any of the workshop training available
during the conference.
c. Paper
Presentation: Participants
will share their idea based on research to the audience using oral
presentations with the aid of power point slides.
d. Social
Night: This will create
a forum for social interactions among the participants with a view to creating
Networking and collaboration. This will take place in a recreational centre
within the UNILORIN Campus and will be spiced with fun, food/snacks and drinks.
B. DAY 2 - May 28, 2016.
a.
Paper Presentation continues.
b. Quiz
Competition: Quiz competitions will be organised for higher institutions
in Nigeria having a NSEC members. School participation is voluntarily and must
be registered for by NSEC School Coordinator. The intention of the quiz is not just to compete for a prize, rather to
building more knowledge in conservation and to further facilitate interaction
among the students. There will be Prizes for the winner, and the 1st and
2nd Runner Up. Certificate of Participation will be given to the four students
representing each of the schools to encourage their participation and boost
their passion for conservation studies.

WHAT IS THE COST OF ATTENDING AND PAPER SUBMISSION AND PRESENTATION THIS EPOCH
CONFERENCE?
The cost of attending the conference is itemised in
the table below;

THIS CONFERENCE?
The following deadline has been set to ensure
success of the programme and not for victimization of any persons or group.
- Paper
submission:
Friday April 15, 2016 to facilitate qualitative review of research
work.
- Registration:
Monday May 02, 2016.
- Accommodation:
Friday May 06, 2016.
8. WHO ARE
THE EXPERTS EXPECTED?
Resource persons in form of eexternal advisors and experts
are expected
from the following institution and association; Nigerian Environmental Society,
Nigerian Tropical Biology Association
Nigeria Conservation Foundation, International Forestry Student Association - Northern African Region, Forestry Research
Institute of Nigeria and some officials of
tertiary institutions in the nation.
9. WILL
THERE BE CERTIFICATE FOR PARTICIPANTS?
The will be certificate for participants in the following categories.
a. Certificate of conference attendance
c. Certificate of paper presentation
d. Certificate for quiz contestants and winners.
e. Certificate from YALI on a course on "Understanding Climate Change..."
10. HOW DO I
MAKE REGISTRATIONS, PAPER SUBMISSION AND PAYMENTS?
The registration will be done by payment through
NSEC Coordinators in each school. A list is provided below.
